Benefits

Melanotan II is a synthetic, cyclic analog of alpha-MSH, studied specifically for erectile dysfunction and sexual desire — distinct from Melanotan I/afamelanotide, which was developed for photoprotection.

Double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study (men with psychogenic erectile dysfunction): clinically apparent erections developed in 8 of 10 men treated, versus a much lower rate on placebo. (Wessells et al., J Urol, 1998 — this specific citation was blocked by a CAPTCHA during direct verification in this research pass; treat with slightly less confidence than the fully re-verified citations elsewhere on this site until confirmed directly.)

Larger follow-up study: erection occurred in 17 of 20 men without sexual stimulation, with a mean of 41 minutes of significant tip rigidity. Increased sexual desire was reported after 68% of MT-2 doses vs. 19% of placebo doses. Molecular/human studies with Melanotan II, Int J Impot Res, 2000

Dosage

The effective dose in the erectile dysfunction studies was reported around 0.025mg/kg, described as producing "manageable" side effects at that level.

Side Effects

Nausea, stretching/yawning, and decreased appetite were all reported more frequently than placebo, transient and not requiring treatment in the trials. At 0.025mg/kg specifically, roughly 12.9% of subjects experienced severe nausea — a real, dose-relevant rate worth stating specifically rather than a generic "mild nausea" claim.

Frequently asked questions

Is Melanotan II FDA-approved?+

No. It is not approved for any use and is sold strictly as a research compound.

What are the commonly reported effects of MT-2?+

Skin pigmentation/tanning is the primary studied effect; nausea, flushing, and changes to moles are commonly reported and are an active safety consideration in the literature.

Is MT-2 the same as PT-141?+

No. Both are melanocortin-pathway peptides, but PT-141 (bremelanotide) is studied for sexual function while MT-2 is studied primarily for pigmentation.
