Sobetirome (GC-1) is a thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRβ)-selective agonist, developed as a thyromimetic for lipid-lowering and metabolic effects while minimizing the cardiac/bone effects of activating the alpha receptor subtype.
Phase I trial (human): described as generally well tolerated across doses studied, with LDL cholesterol reduced by roughly 41% over 2 weeks. (This result comes from a 2008 Endocrine Society meeting abstract, not a full peer-reviewed paper — a lower confidence tier than the fully-published trials cited elsewhere on this site, flagged accordingly.) More recent research has continued into thyromimetics for NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) as a drug class, sobetirome among them.
What does it actually target?+
A specific thyroid hormone receptor — TRβ — rather than your thyroid system broadly. That matters because TRβ handles thyroid hormone's cholesterol/metabolism benefits, while the other receptor type (TRα) causes the heart and bone side effects. Targeting TRβ selectively is the whole point.
What's it actually being researched for?+
Cholesterol management, mainly — promoting LDL clearance and pushing excess cholesterol back to the liver for disposal, getting some of thyroid hormone's metabolic benefit without the broader hormonal effects.
