Raloxifene is a SERM, FDA-approved for breast cancer risk reduction following the STAR trial's demonstration of effectiveness (see Tamoxifen's page for the direct head-to-head data — raloxifene retained ~76% of tamoxifen's invasive-cancer-prevention effect) — and separately approved for osteoporosis prevention/treatment in postmenopausal women.
Side Effects
Raloxifene's real clinical advantage over tamoxifen is a meaningfully better safety profile: significantly lower endometrial cancer risk, lower uterine hyperplasia, and lower thromboembolic events in the same head-to-head STAR trial. Vogel et al., Cancer Prev Res, 2010
